I have noticed that photos in portrait format (taken with the camera sideways) automatically display vertically on a Mac, but when uploaded to certain websites they revert to landscape/horizontal format.

Similarly, if you rotate a photo with Preview on a Mac, Windows doesn't recognize it as having been rotated. I remember reading about this when I first got a Mac, that the Mac doesn't actually rotate the photo, it just displays it as rotated.

Is software that would allow me to rotate a photo on a Mac in a manner that it is recognized as having been rotated when viewed in Windows?

thanks,
Mike

Photoshop would work but is pricey. You might try ImageWell, I don't recall having to pay for it but if I did it wasn't much, here;

When rotating in Preview, Save As and either use a new file name or replace the current image file. That should give you a rotated file that reads no matter what.

iPhoto does this as well. When you export the image it should export a file that is truly rotated.

However, I am almost certain you have auto-rotate set in your camera . Image Capture and iPhoto read the metadata in the image file and apply this rotation based on that. I've never run into Image Capture auto rotating unless I had that set in the camera itself.
