When I open several images in photoshop CS4 or open a new image while one is already open, all images exist in one window with a tab for each image. Is there a way to turn this function off? I prefer each image being its own window.

For temporary use go to Window/Arrange/Float All in Windows.
To put them back in Tabs go to Window/Arrange/Consolidate All to Tabs.

If you want them to always open as separate documents do this:
In Preferences go to Interface and uncheck Open Documents As Tabs.
Under Window uncheck Application Frame. You will then need to restart Photoshop.

You can also change the arrangement of open windows via the Application bar (top bar with the PS logo). You can use the Arrange Documents button.

Please forgive that this example is on Windoze.

Actually, that sounds like a cool feature - wish they had it in CS3.
